What you can read

If you like reading something short with pictures, you can read a newspaper or a magazine. The newspaper contains not only news but also comic strips! Magazines are interesting to read because they contain glossy, colour pictures. These are available in shops and also our library and reading room.

If you like pictures, you can also read comics. Comic books are not only entertaining to read but can also help you improve your English. The pictures enable you to understand the words used in the story. Archie comics are available in our reading room but if you want to read more comics, why don't you drop by a bookshop? You can find other titles like Superman, Batman, MAD and so on. Some people sell their unwanted comics as cheap as $1 per book. Watch out for bargains at garage sales!

Besides comics, there are other kinds of books you can read. Do you like romance or horror? Maybe you like to read about mysteries? Perhaps you want to read a thriller or a short story? There are also books on detectives if you like to read those. These genres are available in the reading room. Pick up a book to read today!

Have you heard of a story called "The Lion and the Mouse?" or "The Crow and the Pitcher?" These are examples of fables which are stories about animals. You can also read fairy tales which are stories that contain a moral lesson. The book "Tales from Shakespeare" doesn't contain fairy tales. It contains stories which Shakespeare had written such as "Romeo & Juliet", "Hamlet" and so on which are shortened for teenage readers. Some of these books come with a cassette or CD. You can listen and read at the same time!

Do you like reading stories about growing up? Why don't you read the books below. These books are what we call classics and are loved by people all over the world. The book titled "The Phantom of the Opera" is a very interesting story to read. It is a story about a very talented man who pretends to be a ghost and terrorize the people in an opera house in France. He fell in love with an opera singer named Christine whom he had taught to sing since she was young. Do you think Christine would love the phantom?

Some books are based on real events or famous people. The books below are based on important events in the history of England such as the black plague. Leornado Da Vinci was a Renaissance man who is famous for his paintings and inventions. Read some books about him and I'm sure you will find him a genius!

The book "Bloody Tower" is part of the My Story collection. The book is a bit different than other books because it is written in the style of a diary.

Who knew history can be funny and interesting at the same time? Read some interesting facts about the Greeks, Victorians, Romans, Vikings and so on. Some of the Horrible Histories collection are available in the reading room. These books also contain funny illustrations and has proven to be a hit among children and adults too!

Another funny book is The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Stories. It contains a collection of classic tales such as The Gingerbread Man and The Ugly Duckling but with a twist! Read books like this and have a laugh.

Islamic history is very fascinating as many Muslim scholars have contributed to modern Science. Few of the Muslim scholars are mentioned in textbooks despite their major influences in surgery, astronomy, mathematics and so on. The books below are examples of Muslim figures in history. The books are easy to follow and contain beautiful illustrations.

Some books are based on movies or have been made into movies. Have you read The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe? Why don't you watch the movie too and compare. Sometimes the book can be better than the movie. Ratatouille is a book based on a movie. It is suitable for children and teenagers too. Even adults enjoy reading the book. Who can be blamed when Remy is so cute?

Some books are called non-fiction because they contain facts. However, that doesn't mean the books are not interesting! Do you know the origin of chocolate and how it is made? Do you know how many helium balloons you need to lift you up in the air? Answers to these questions can be found in the books below. Look for these types of books in the reading room under NF.

Another type of non-fiction book is autobiography. Read about the life of Simon Cowell, the nasty judge in American Idol. There are also biographies written about famous people such as Princess Diana, Einstein, Florence Nightingale and so on. Find books like these in bookshops.

Do you want to pick up a different hobby or learn something new? There are many books and magazines on scrapbooking, needlework, cooking, fitness and so on. Learn a new skill and impress your friends! You can use a dictionary if you don't understand some words.

Remember to use a bookmark to indicate on which page you stopped reading so you can continue your reading without a fuss. You can even make a simple bookmark yourself.

It is great if you keep a reading journal for you to keep track of what you have read. It is like a reading log book but bigger. In your reading journal, jot down what you have read and the writer. Also include your thoughts or comments. In your journal, you can write down words that you have just learnt or write a short book report. You can also keep sketches in your journal. Draw your favourite character or imagine a scene from a story. Write a caption underneath the picture.

After you have finished reading, put the book or magazine neatly. Start reading today!
