What is reading for pleasure?

Have you ever read a book, the newspaper or a magazine because you felt like it? Have you read something that wasn't part of your revision or homework? Ever felt like reading a comic book just to reduce tension like the girl in the picture?

Reading for pleasure is reading just for your entertainment or simply put, reading just for fun. Of course, you might disagree on the fun bit so why don't you try the tips below to make reading a more pleasurable experience!

  • Ask yourself what material do you feel like reading. You can choose a book or a magazine. Maybe a comic book or a newspaper? Perhaps you want to read something on-line?
  • If you choose a book or a magazine, do you think it is too thick for you? Choose something that is thick enough for you.
  • Do you think the story is too long and difficult to understand? Choose something of appropriate length and make sure that the vocabulary is easy enough.
  • Do you want something with pictures in it?
  • Is the print large enough? There are books and magazines which are labelled "large print". The words are written in larger size so you can read easily.
  • Is the place comfortable enough? Check that the spot is not too noisy nor hot. Make sure there is plenty of light!
  • You can have something to munch on and drink while you are reading (not in the library or reading room). Just don't leave any crumbs!
There are plenty more tips for you to enjoy reading. Ask your teacher if he or she has any reading recommendations!
