Ram Mohammad Thomas wins a billion rupees on a quiz show. He is thrown into jail because he is an orphan and someone uneducated. It is impossible for him to know all the answers to the questions! The program producers are unable to pay Ram the cash so they bribed the police to keep him in jail and declare that Ram cheated in the quiz. Ram is tortured in jail until he is unconscious.
Lawyer Smita Shah gets Ram released from prison and listens to his explanation on how he knew all the answers.
A very interesting and funny read. It's much more interesting than the film, offering more twists in the plot.
Trivia:
The book was originally published as "Q & A" by Vikras Swarup before it was made into a film. The title "Slumdog Millionaire" created an uproar among the slum-dwellers in India. They protested being compared to dogs.
Jai-Ho, the soundtrack of the film sung by the Pussycat Dolls and AR Rahman means "may victory be yours".
You'll find the book in the reading room. Suitable for upper secondary students.
